A season that once looked so promising came to a crashing conclusion Friday night in the second-round of the Class A Sectional 46 for the Sheridan Blackhawks.
Coach Bud Wright's squad wound up on the short end of a 55-12 shellacking at the hands of top-ranked Indianapolis Lutheran.
The game, much like the season, started out well for SHS. Silas Devaney rushed for a 52-yard touchdown in the first quarter for the Blackhawks, but Lutheran pulled away behind six touchdown passes from Blake White and the outcome was never in doubt.
The year started off with four victories in five outings, including a pair of wins over larger schools Benton Central and defending state champ Western Boone. Sheridan was state ranked again and back among the elite schools in Indiana Class A football.
But when the calendar turned to October, the season turned for the Blackhawks. Sheridan lost four of the last five games by an average of 27 points. It's now been eight seasons since SHS won a sectional title and 13 seasons since the 2007 15-0 State Champs.
